Powering Canada’s Energy Future, Built in London
Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly was in London to announce a $30 million federal investment in Hitachi Energy Canada. The investment supports a $478.8 million project to build Canada’s first electrical-grade pressboard manufacturing facility, right here in our city.
London has long been a city of builders, innovators and skilled workers, and I was glad to welcome this investment to our community.
A First-of-its-Kind Facility for Canada
The new facility will turn wood fibre into up to 20,000 tonnes a year of electrical-grade pressboard and insulation materials used in high-voltage transformers. These are critical components for the power grid, at a time when demand is growing from grid modernization, electrification, renewable energy and data centres.
The federal investment includes $20 million through the Strategic Response Fund and $10 million through the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation program. It will help Hitachi Energy bring advanced manufacturing technology and automation to a state-of-the-art facility.
More Than 100 New Jobs in London
Hitachi Energy will create more than 100 new jobs at its London facility, maintain its existing workforce of about 1,250 employees, and grow its Canadian workforce to 1,765. The project will also create new opportunities for Canadian suppliers by sourcing key inputs locally, including from our forest products sector.
Strengthening Canada’s Supply Chains
This investment advances our government’s National Electricity Strategy, strengthening Canada’s grid with clean, affordable and reliable energy. It also supports Canada’s forest sector at a time of unjustified tariffs, by opening new markets for Canadian forest products.
In an unpredictable world, we are investing in the industries and workers who will power Canada’s future, and London is at the centre of that work.
Made in London. Powering Canada.
