Supporting AI Innovation in London’s Health Sector
I was pleased to visit Deep Breathe Inc. to highlight our government’s expanded support for artificial intelligence across southern Ontario and a new federal investment in one of London’s most innovative health technology companies.
FedDev Ontario is providing over $1 million to Deep Breathe for a project worth more than $2 million, to help the company scale and commercialize its AI-powered lung ultrasound system.
A London Company Improving Patient Care
Deep Breathe’s system uses AI to analyze lung ultrasound images, helping healthcare providers diagnose lung conditions more quickly at the point of care. As a more efficient, accurate and portable alternative to traditional chest X-rays, it has the potential to support faster diagnoses, reduce healthcare costs and reduce patients’ exposure to radiation.
This investment will help the company bring its technology to more hospitals, emergency medical services and military medicine settings.
Expanding AI Adoption Across Southern Ontario
The visit also highlighted an additional $500 million over five years to expand the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative, bringing total federal funding for the national initiative to $700 million. It is part of AI for All, Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
The initiative helps businesses adopt AI responsibly to improve productivity and competitiveness, and helps Canadian AI companies find customers, attract investment and scale their products. It focuses on sectors where Canada has strong expertise, including health and life sciences, manufacturing and agriculture.
Southern Ontario is home to more than half of Canada’s AI firms. By investing in companies like Deep Breathe, we are strengthening London’s position as a leader in health and AI innovation.
